I wish....

Saturday, 19 October 2013

.... I could be a morning person. I swear I'm not human til lunch time and no amount of caffeine helps. Other people can leap out of bed and achieve a million things by 10.00 am while I'm pouring coffee down my throat and resisting the urge not to throw myself back under the covers.

.... I could sing. Now don't get me wrong I don't want to sing for a living, I just want to be able to carry a tune. I have always loved to sing, whenever there is music playing I'm singing along. Unfortunately nobody loves to hear me so I try to keep the noise level to a minimum. The same applies to whistling, I've never been able to do it as easy as everyone else makes it.

.... I could understand my sons maths homework. It was my worst subject and he seems to have taken after me. It's so frustrating to watch him struggle and only be of minimal assistance. He's doing really well in everything else so I'm not too worried, I just wish I could help.

Workplace Bullying

Monday, 14 October 2013

This is a topic that is close to my heart as a friend of mine felt she had no option but to leave her job due to bullying. Now surely something is wrong if my friend is leaving the workplace and not her bullies so I did a little research.

- 8 in 10 workers are affected in some way by workplace bullying.

- 80% of managers know that bullying is occurring in their workplace.

- 19 million sick days are lost to bullying per year.

- Tribunal statistics rose last year.

Yeah, I was shocked too. I watched my friend go through hell. She did everything she was supposed to do, trying to sort things out herself before reporting the problem. Everywhere she turned she hit a brick wall and her managers only solution was to offer a transfer. My friend refused at first as she loved her place of work and asked if something could be done to avoid the transfer. Unfortunately nothing was done and she recently left the company altogether.

I feel that my friend was badly let down by her employers and it is my opinion that more should be done to ensure companies are dealing with bullying appropriately. Bullying in the workplace is not acceptable ever.

Have you ever had experience of workplace bullying? How was it dealt with?

Statistics taken from hrdiversity.co.uk

Insomnia

Friday, 11 October 2013

For about a month now I have completely lost the ability to sleep. I have never been the best sleeper in the world but it's getting ridiculous. I am now starting to sleep in for work/school because I havnt got to sleep until 4, just 10 or 20 minutes but it's a mad rush and I feel like death.
Even after a 12 hour shift at work I'm wide awake. At 3.30 this morning I had been awake for 22 hours and still didn't feel tired.
I have asked myself the obvious questions. I'm not overly stressed, I'm not really worried about anything and I never have time to nap during the day.
I have stopped having caffeine after 6pm drinking camomile tea instead. So far this has made no difference. I also make sure not to fall asleep on the sofa on my days off as tempting as this is.
I'm at a loss as to what else to try as for me medication is not an option for me. Ideas anyone?

My Kitchen Wall

Wednesday, 9 October 2013

I have been looking for something retro inspired for my kitchen wall for ages. I was thrilled to come across this beautiful and affordable decal. It's exactly what I've been looking for and the words are pretty true too. It was tricky to apply to the wall, it took 3 of us but I love the end result. It looks gorgeous and finishes off my retro theme nicely. Now for the bathroom.

Destination Wish List

Monday, 7 October 2013

I love to travel and experience new places and cultures. Unfortunately I don't get to do it as often as I would like but I can still dream. Here's my top 5 places on my wish list.

Graceland

I'm a huge Elvis fan so this has got to be top of my list. I've heard nothing but good things from friends who have visited. Oh and staying at the Heartbreak Hotel is a must.

Rome

This is somewhere I would love to take my son as he loves history and is passionate about all things Roman. Also making a wish at the Tivoli Fountain is on my bucket list.

Safari

Not really fussy about the actual destination maybe Kenya. I have always wanted to do this but havnt found anyone adventurous enough to go with me yet.

Niagra Falls

This just looks so beautiful and powerful and a million other descriptive words I can't think of right now. Nature at it's finest.

The Northern Lights

Sticking to the the theme of nature we have the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis as they are known to people who can pronounce it. This just looks so breathtakingly magical I really hope to get there one day. I've been told it's well worth a visit even though the north coast of Norway is freezing beyond imagination.

What would be on your list?

News and Interviews

Thursday, 3 October 2013

I went back to work this week after 2 weeks off and it wasn't as bad as I thought. It's amazing how quickly I can get back into the swing of things. I really enjoyed my time off and got quite a lot done.

I am spending today looking for fancy dress for my son. We are going to comic con in November and he is going as the 11th Doctor, I'm having a nightmare trying to find a second hand tweed jacket. Anybody else in fancy dress hell?

I'm thrilled to be featured on Our Little Nest today. Check out Chelsea's lovely blog and read an interview with me here.

I will be having a blog hopping weekend as I'm lucky enough to be co hosting 2 blog hops. Don't forget to stop by and link up.

Not A Cooking Mama

Wednesday, 2 October 2013

Well I'm just going to say it and then it's over with. I hate cooking!
I've always hated it. I find it stressful and very unrewarding as I'm always disappointed in the results. Recipe books bore me and I will never understand my mums addiction to buying them.
I love food, I love going to fancy restaurants and trying new dishes but the thought of cooking that food fills me with dread.
Don't get me wrong I'm not lazy, I do cook but only because we have to eat and I want my son to have a healthy diet. I'm not that bad at it either. I havnt poisoned anyone that I know of.
I don't think I will ever enjoy cooking or be excited about creating a meal. To me it's a chore that has to be done, just like ironing really.
My friends love cooking and take great pride in sending me photos of muffins, cakes and homemade bread. I really try to join in with their enthusiasm.
One of my close friends is having a party soon and she has asked me to help with the food and I will because she's my friend. As long as I don't have to make the cake!

Changes

Friday, 27 September 2013

I havn't blogged all week because I have been making some changes in my life.

I have ended a friendship that was not healthy and quite frankly was co dependant.
It was a very hard thing to do although I have known for some time I would be doing it I was waiting for the right time.
It was a friendship that was exhausting and mentally draining and my life revolved around not upsetting this person. I was absolutely the wrong person for them to turn to and ending the  friendship was the only way either of us could move forward.
Knowing that I was doing the right thing did not make it any easier although I do know that I havnt abandoned them. This person has a support network and we have no place in each other's lives now.
This may seem like a very personal thing to blog about and I promise my next post will be much more light hearted, but writing about it helps me and my heart feels much lighter already.
So now it's a fresh start. I can concentrate on me and my family and look forward to whatever is to come my way.

Minor Irritations

Saturday, 21 September 2013

I have spent the last few days in bed with a throat infection.

This is what I wish I had looked like.

Instead I lay in bed trying to get comfortable and getting more and more irritated. Everything annoyed me.

- The new software on my phone
- The person who visits my neighbour
   with the extremely loud laugh.
- Not knowing when I'm due back at
work because they can't get the rota
   organised.
- My left eye which wouldn't stop
   watering.
- People who make arrangements then
when the time comes say it was never
   definite.

All minor annoyances I know but I was feeling so ill I let everything get to me.
I'm usually such a tolerant person. So now I've had my mini rant, I'm starting to feel better already.

A Born Worrier

Wednesday, 18 September 2013

For as long as I can remember I have worried. Now I realise that everybody does but I'm not just talking about the big life changing things, I mean everything! Sweating the small stuff keeps me going I thrive on it, I worry if I have nothing to worry about.

When I was a child I worried so much I made myself sick. Whatever the problem was would go round and round in my head and would get bigger and bigger and bigger. Nothing has changed really but I manage to keep my stomach under control.

In the past I worried about school work, test results and minor arguments with my friends. Then it was boys, my weight and were my clothes on trend.

Then 15 years ago a new focus for my worry appeared and I swear every day my son has been on this planet I have worried about him and he really gives me no cause. I do know that it is natural to worry about your child but when you don't sleep for 2 weeks because they are starting a new school then maybe things are getting out of hand.

My job has also been a constant cause for my worry. I have done the same job since I left school and I love it. I gained qualifications to a high level and I like to think I'm good at it. So why for 18 years have I been terrified I'm going to lose it. Even I know it doesn't make sense.

Currently I'm worrying about my sons exams, keeping my gorgeous tiny little puppy alive, being single for the rest of my life and the lines that are appearing on my face ( which to be fair is probably from worry). I also worry about my blog. Is it good enough? Will anybody ever read it?

The sane part of me ( there is one honestly) knows that all this worrying wont change anything, what will be will be. I just can't help it and the people who tell me to stop it might as well be telling me to stop breathing. I'm going to end this post here because I'm already starting to worry that it's too long.

Are you a born worrier? What keeps you awake at night?

My Autumn Reading List

Monday, 16 September 2013

As the weather gets cooler there's nothing I like more than curling up with a good book. Here's what I have in my to read pile.

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane - Neil Gaiman:
I have heard great reports about this book and I'm a huge fan of stories with something magical about them.

Inferno - Dan Brown:
I loved the other books in this series so I can't wait to start this one. It's pretty long so I may tackle this one soon while I still have time off work.

The Casual Vacancy - JK Rowling:
It's took me a while to get round to this book as I've heard mixed reviews but as a huge fan of the author I think it's worth a try.

Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro:
I have seen the movie of this book and was completely surprised by the subject matter. The story is both emotional and shocking and I've been told there's a lot more in the book.

The Woman Who Went To Bed For A Year - Sue Townsend:
What a wonderful idea! I bet there's more than a few women out there who wish they could follow the example of the main character  in this book. Looking forward to this one.

Have you read any of these books? If so what did you think? What's on your to read list?

Just Chitchat

Saturday, 14 September 2013

Today I'm celebrating the start of 2 whole weeks off work. I'm not going away but we have a few days out planned and a few pj days too.

I'm looking forward to going out for a family meal to our local Italians. The food and atmosphere are both great. The ice cream is out of this world.the chocolate sundae is my favourite.

In other news I have started my Xmas shopping which is extremely early for me. I'm determined to be organised this year. My son is feeling very inspired at the moment so I havn't got much to go off but it's a start.
It still hasn't got me in a Christmassy mood but I did find this lovely bed that Santa could bring for the baby of the family.

Watching - Dexter

Now I realise Dexter has been around for quite a while now but I just never got around to it before. I'm a binge watcher so now I have 8 seasons to sink my teeth into I'm loving it.

Listening To - She and Him

I've loved She and Him from their first album, their easy, relaxing sound is just perfect to unwind to. Zooey Deschanel has a gorgeous voice, full of emotion.

Reading - The Phantom Of The Opera by Gaston Leroux

Admit it, you sang that title! I love mysteries and this dark gothic romance is a classic. I'm loving it up to now and it's not too scary.

Wearing - ModCloth Knitwear

I just love the gorgeous knitwear at ModCloth and I took delivery of these 4 lovelies last week. Not too thick, perfect for autumn.

Wishing For - Little Mermaid Tank

I have an obsession with graphic tees and have quite a collection now. I fell in love with this one when I found it on Store Envy.

A Letter To My 16 Year Old Self

Monday, 9 September 2013

Dear Linsey,

There's so much I want to say to you I hardly know where to begin. Your innocence and romantic notions amaze me, part of you will always remain that way.
You are so happy and have two parents who love you so very much. Try not to judge them so harshly, they are just trying to protect you. One day you will have a son of your own and will know how it feels to never want to let your child go.
In about a years time you will choose your career path and people will laugh , they will tell you that it's not for you. You will prove them wrong.
You are going to meet so many people and go to some wonderful places. You will love like there's no tomorrow and you will hurt. But you will learn from the bad times.
Motherhood will come to you earlier than you expected but you will never regret it. Oh and please don't buy anything pink based on a feeling or at least keep the receipts.
I know you think you need to be in a relationship to make you whole but one day you will surprise yourself and be more independent than you ever thought you could be.
One day you will be 35 with a teenage son and deranged puppy. You will have been in the same job for 18 years and still love it. You will single handedly decorate your house in your own quirky way. You will have fantastic friends who never let you get down. You will be happy.

35 year old you xx

Ps. Do not take that cigarette on your 17th birthday. It will take you years to break the habit.
